A double chin may look endearing on babies, but it is less loved on grown-ups. The double chin blunts the aesthetic angle between the head and the neck, adding not only pounds, but also years to your age.
Unfortunately it is not possible to burn away the double chin “submental” fat by any form of facial exercises. Apart from using photoshop, the swiftest way to get rid of a double chin is by removal using liposuction, or by melting it using lipodissolve, or fat-busting energy devices such as laser or ultrasound or radiofrequency. We speak to aesthetic experts, and find out how out how these therapies help to bid adieu to the dreaded double chin.

Lipodissolve
An injection that dissolves stubborn fat is no longer a fantasy. Lipodissolve, contains Kybella, a US FDA-approved treatment for chin and neck fat. The star of the show is deoxycholic acid. Dr Low Chai Ling, Medical Director from SW1 Clinic explains how Lipodissolve works: “The active ingredient deoxycholic acid is clinically proven to promote fat breakdown and reduce the double chin bulk. A few sessions are needed, one month apart, to achieve the desired effect. The number of sessions will depend on how severe the double chin is.” Dr Low added that although there may be a mild skin tightening effect after Lipodissolve, it is best combined with skin tightening treatments, such as Ulthera, Thermage or Infinity Neck Thread Lifts, to achieve a better sculpted result.

Vaser Liposuction
By far, liposuction is the swiftest and most effective way to remove submental fat. The removal of fat is made through a few hidden nicks in the skin, usually behind the ears and under the chin. The type of liposuction is important. “Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound waves to liquefy fat and the same ultrasonic energy promotes skin tightening, which targets the saggy skin under the chin,” explains Dr Chia Hui Ling, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, “the effect is fat reduction and skin tightening in a single session.” Vaser has superior results compared to its non-surgical counterparts, but you may expect some swelling and bruising, which will resolve within a week. The final appearance achievable is seen after 3 months, when skin remodeling is complete.

Endotine Ribbon Lift
If more tightening is desired, in serious “turkey necks”, surgeons use the Endotine Lift device to lift and tighten skin to a more elevated and youth position. The Ribbon Lift is placed through hidden cuts behind the ear and is the most effective minimally-invasive lift device available.
