Brows – The Secret To A Younger Face

If, once, brows were an afterthought of beauty, they are now a focus. Today, many women have a brow icon, from Her Eyebrowness, model Cara Delevingne, to Song Hye Kyo’s natural soft arching brows. Brow pimping, like HD browsmicrobladingbrow hair transplant, is ever on the rise. Brows are big business too, British women spend, on average, £200 a year on eyebrow grooming.

Shapely Brows

The age old saying of how the eyebrows frame the face lives on. A full and well-shaped pair of brows is an instant beautifier. You may leave your brows to grooming experts, or choose to shape your own brows. The common approach is to shape them based on your eyes:

Personally, I prefer using the golden ratio to shape my brows.  The golden ratio, or simply phi, is the value 1.618.  Artists, including plastic surgeons, proportion their works according to phi, because it is believed to be aesthetically pleasing to the human eye.

Prime Position

The most often neglected, yet most important brow feature, is the position of the brows. Low set brows, also known as brow ptosis, is a phenomenon of facial aging (although some do get it prematurely). Apart from adding years to the face, they portray an angry look. Descending brows also cause the upper eyelid skin to sag and hood. In severe cases, this may even block the vision.

Lift Those Brows

Brow lift surgery is an often misunderstood procedure. I have always presumed that it is a surgery that has a long downtime with unacceptable scars. Until an aunt of mine went through it.  She had severely droopy brows, which led to droopy upper eyelids that affected part of her vision. One endoscopic brow lift later, it lifted her brows, smoothed out her forehead and frown lines and reduced the eyelid hooding. Overall, it gave her a more refreshed and youthful look. What we were most impressed with were the “invisible” scars, well-concealed within her hairline, with no tell-tale signs that she had surgery.

Brow Lift In The Know

In my early forties, my forehead is scored with unwanted lines and my eyelids are starting to hood. With our hereditary brow ptosis, I did not try to hide my enthusiasm and literally interrogated my aunt on how the brow lift was done and the recovery process. The procedure was performed by her plastic surgeon and she was under sedation the whole time and so didn’t feel a thing. When she woke up, there was no pain and went home the same day with what she described as a feeling of tightness around her head and forehead.  The swelling and bruising was worst in the first 3 days, which also migrated down her face into her eyes and cheeks.  Social downtime was around a week for her. She felt some numbness around the cuts in the scalp (not a bad thing according to her) which got better over a few weeks.

Brow Resurrection

What I also lust after are full, glorious brows. Gone are the days of super-thin brows. These days the thicker the better and, along with glam brow products, microbladingis one of the most popular ways to amp up your arches. Microbladingis an updated semi-permanent make-up tool where, by inserting pigment into the top layers of skin, the desired fullness and shape of the eyebrows is created. The effects last up to 12-24 months, depending on skin types, after which the pigment fades leaving the skin and your natural brows exactly as they were.
