The number of cosmetic surgeries is on the upswing. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of aesthetic surgeries performed in 2017 ticked up 2% from 2016. In 2017 ASPS ranked breast augmentation, liposuction and rhinoplasty as the 3 commonest cosmetic surgeries. With many Asians having monolids, the popularity of eyelid surgery surpasses rhinoplasty as being one of the top three aesthetic surgeries in Singapore.

Breast Augmentation
In US alone, there were over 300,000 breast augmentation surgeries in 2017. Recent years also saw an increase in natural breast augmentation. The escalating interest in fat transfer to the breast is not at all surprising. Apart from giving a natural boost to your bust, it helps take inches off the waistline and hips too. Fat is harvested from an area of preference using liposuction, before processing and re-injecting into the breasts. Those considering fat grafting to the breast need to be aware of its downsides too. More than one session is often needed to reach your desired boob size. Fat resources are limited if you are slim, especially if you are looking at more than a cup size increase. In these situations, a breast implant augmentation is a better choice. Adding to the popularity of breast augmentation in recent years is the use of a 3D imaging simulator, like Vectra XT 3D during the consultation. Ladies can now visualize the simulation of different implants during their decision-making process.

Eyelid Surgery
Monolids are common in people of Chinese descent and many desire larger eyes and defined eyelid creases (also known as double eyelids). The double eyelid fold, which is surgically sculpted in an upper blepharoplasty, is considered part of a beautiful upper eyelid in the Oriental culture. There are 2 main forms of surgeries – suture or open. In suture upper blepharoplasty (or SUB), the double eyelid is created using sutures placed through small punctures along the new crease. This technique has less downtime but is not suitable for many Orientals who has puffy eyelids or loose eyelid skin. The incisional blepharoplasty may be more suitable these cases, where the surgeon makes a cut that is concealed along the new double eyelid fold. With the incisional blepharoplasty technique, the surgeon can remove excess skin and fat, and create bigger eyes at the same time.

Eyebags and dark circles are very common complaints amongst city dwellers, no thanks to late nights and poor sleep patterns. Similarly, there are 2 ways to correct this problem surgically. Either scarless, using the transconjunctival blepharoplasty technique to remove eyebag fat and erase tear troughs, or transcutaneous. In the transcutaneous approach, the incision is hidden by placing it close to the lower lashline. Loose, wrinkled skin can be removed using the transcutaneous technique, and is preferred when there are more aging eyelid changes.

Liposuction
The popularity of liposuction spans across all cultures. In the US, nearly 250,000 liposuction procedures were done in 2017 alone (5% higher than in 2016). In Singapore, liposuction is on the rise too. Liposuction can be done under general or local anaesthesia, and often done alongside other procedures, offering both versatility and convenience. The pairing of technology with liposuction also accounts for its rising popularity. Vaser Liposculpture uses ultrasonic energy to emulsify fat and facilitate removal. The same energy also stimulates skin tightening, giving a more sculpted result.
