The Most-Worth-It Cosmetic Procedures

When it comes to cosmetic surgeries, word-of-mouth and witnessing your friends’ results would probably be your most trusted source. Reliable reviews would be next in line. I recently discovered Realself, an online platform where people come to learn about procedures and leave unbiased reviews. What an excellent way to help people make smart, confident choices and to connect with vetted board-certified surgeons. Realself have stringent guidelines when it comes to identifying surgeons, who meet their multistep professional and patient care requirements. Very few platforms offer this level of transparency.

Recently, Realself listed their #mostworthit cosmetic procedures. Can you guess what some of them are? Here’s the 2019 Worth It Ranking. We listed the pros and cons of 3 common cosmetic surgeries that made it to the list.

Rhinoplasty

rhinoplasty most worth it

Pros

  • A nose job can create more balance and proportion in your facial features.
  • If you’ve spent years obsessing over the shape of your nose, having surgery can boost your self-confidence, making you feel more comfortable in their own skin.
  • In almost all cases, rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery, so you’ll go home the same day.
  • Recovery isn’t too painful, more like a stuffy , congested feeling
  • When it’s simultaneously correcting a structural issue, a nose job can help you breathe more easily.

Cons

  • It’s relatively pricey. Insurance will cover your procedure only if something structural needs correcting for medical reasons, such as nasal obstruction.
  • You can expect visible swelling and bruising for at least the first 14 days post-op.
  • Although the surgery is considered minor, there are potential side effects from general anaesthesia, including nausea, vomiting, and a sore throat.
  • The splint that is worn for the first week can be uncomfortable and make your nose feel clogged.
  • It can take up to a year to see your final results, and they may not match your expectations.
  • If your nose doesn’t heal properly—or your surgery wasn’t done well the first time—you may need a revision rhinoplasty, which is a costly and complex procedure.

Eyelid Surgery

eyelids most worth it
Pros

  • Eyelid surgery can make you look refreshed, awake, and more youthful.
  • Most eyelid surgeries take less than 2 hours.
  • Some eyelid surgeries can be done under local anaesthetic or sedation, so there’s less post-op nausea and recovery than with general anaesthesia.
  • The recovery is fairly easy, with one to two weeks of significant swelling and bruising.
  • Because the incisions are made in the natural creases of your lids, they are minimally visible once healed.

Cons

  • As with any surgery, bleeding and infection can develop after an eyelid lift.
  • You may experience dry eye or irritation post-surgery.
  • As with most surgeries, results aren’t permanent; some people will need their eyelids lifted again within the next 15 years as the aging process progresses.
  • Eyelid surgery comes with a risk of injury to your eye muscles (though this is rare).
  • Some patients may see increased darkness under their eyes after lower eyelid surgery.
  • If too much skin is removed, the procedure can affect your ability to fully close your eyes.

Mummy Makeover

Mumm makeover, tummy tuck, diastasis recti most worth it

Pros

  • A mommy makeover addresses a range of concerns (tummy and breasts) in one surgery, so you have to go under anaesthesia only once and endure just a single recovery.
  • It can get you back to looking like you did before you got pregnant—and often even better, with a fuller and more lifted bustline and a more contoured tummy.
  • Stretch marks and C-section scars may be removed or improved by the tummy tuck. It can also repair diastasis recti (which occurs when the abdominal muscles separate at the midline and a pooch peeks out) and hernias as well as reduce back pain and urinary incontinence (according to recent research).
  • RealSelf members who say their mommy makeover was worth it reported feeling a newfound confidence.

Cons

  • You’ll need two to four weeks of downtime after a mommy makeover and up to three months to fully recover, since multiple procedures are involved.
  • A tummy tuck and liposuction don’t protect against future weight gain. Good candidates for a mommy makeover are at or close to their ideal body weight and prepared to maintain it by eating a healthy diet and exercising.
  • As with any surgery, there’s a risk of infection and blood clots.
  • There’s a limit to how many procedures you should have done at one time, for your safety. It’s generally recommended that elective procedures not take more than six to eight hours, and a tummy tuck alone can take three to four hours and breast augmentation  one to two hours.
  • A mommy makeover leaves scars, including a hip-to-hip scar from the tummy tuck. However, the scars should be well hidden under clothing (even in a bathing suit) and fade with time. There are also a number of treatments to help reduce scars.
  • You can’t schedule this surgery right after you’ve had a baby, as tempting as that may be. It is recommended to wait until you’re done having kids—plus at least six months after you stop breastfeeding—so you don’t undo your surgical results. This also helps your surgeon accurately gauge what your body looks like at its baseline.
