Liposuction Recovery 101

After our last post on All About Lipo, I received many questions on what one should expect after liposuction surgery. To help answer these questions, we interviewed experienced plastic surgery nurse, Ms Fatin, from SW1 Plastic Surgery Clinic, who have been taking care of patients after liposuction for many years. Knowing what to expect and how to hasten the recovery will help to ease anxiety for those considering liposuction.

What should most clients expect to experience during recovery post-liposuction?

After liposuction, patients will expect to see several dressings on them depending on which areas were worked on. Typically, we will advise patients to come back for a follow-up review between 3-7 days post-operatively. Compressive garments will also be issued to patients to be worn round the clock. Hospitalisation is only required if there is a large amount of fat removed and patients would be advised to take a few days off. Otherwise, patients would be able to go home the day itself after 2-3 hours of recovery from the anaesthesia. Patients are also able to resume work the next day if the target areas are small.


Is it painful and how long will the pain last?

Patients should expect to have bruising and feel mild soreness for 1 to 2 weeks. Most describe it like deep aching sensation after a workout.

What will help with recovery after liposuction?

Anti-swelling and painkiller medications will be prescribed to counter discomfort after liposuction. Surgeons would recommend to wear compressive garments from weeks to months post-surgery as it helps with swelling and helps achieve a better contour by bedding the skin down. Low-salt diets can also help with swelling.


How long will it take to see results and how long will it last?

It is important to understand that it will take about 3 months or longer to see results. Often times patient may even gain weight due to the fluids infused during the procedure but fortunately, it is temporary. Many patients are more encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising after seeing their results. The easiest way to maintain results is to exercise.



What should I avoid in my diet to help with receoery and prevent weight gain again?


– Saturated Fats – Solid at room temperature, which is found in most animals and animal by products, as well as fried and processed foods.

– Sugar – Sugar and sugary food may cause weight gain and defeat the goal of your Liposuction treatment. Sugar is also low in vitamins and nutrition and will not offer any benefit to the healing process of your body.

– Salty foods – You should avoid these foods for at least two to four weeks after liposuction. Sodium is known to cause swelling within the body, thereby affecting the process of recovery. Nevertheless, you can use salt substitutes such as natural herbs and spices.

– Alcohol – Alcoholic drinks can have a negative interaction with any post-treatment medication as well as cause dehydration. You must avoid alcohol for at least 2 weeks post-procedure. Instead, you should consume healthy quantities of water and natural juices to aid your body in the recovery process as well as flush out any harmful toxins associated with medication and the procedure.
